Mr. Bernard was a member of the firm for his entire legal career of
over 60 years prior to his retirement in 2010. He practiced in trust
and estate work, primarily planning, drafting and administering of
complex estate plans, estates, and serving as trustee or co-trustee of
numerous trusts. During the last two decades he served as counsel and
Board member for numerous not-for-profit organizations including both
small and large private foundations and residential condominiums.
During his career he also practiced in the areas of income taxation,
real property and corporation law. |
Mr. Bernard was involved
extensively in civic, religious and philanthropic work and received
the 2002 Chisholm Award from the Greater Kansas City Community
Foundation for his philanthropic leadership and guidance of clients' charitable planning. He was a long time member of the Board of the
College of the Ozarks. He lectured on estate planning and served as
mentor to a number of the attorneys in the firm in that and other
areas of his expertise.
Mr. Bernard received his L.L.B. from
the University of Kansas School of Law (Order of the COIF) and his
Bachelor of Arts from the University of Kansas (Phi Beta Kappa) and
was admitted to practice in Missouri in 1948. He also attended the
Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Law
School. He served as a Chief Warrant Officer in the U.S. Army during
World War II. He was formerly a Fellow of the America College of Trust
and Estate Counsel, a member of the American Bar Association, the
Kansas City Bar Association and the Missouri Bar, and was President of
the Estate Planning Council of Kansas City.
