Mr. Bernard has been with the firm for his entire legal career which began in 1976.  His estate planning work includes creation and funding of trusts (revocable and irrevocable), preparation of wills and estate plans,  titling of assets, estate liquidity issues, powers of attorney and health care directives and related estate planning considerations. His not-for-profit work includes serving as counsel for large and small foundations and working with several charities.

In connection with real estate, he is involved with negotiating and preparing real estate sales contracts and leases, financing documentation, deeds, closing statements and related matters; analysis of title commitments and the easements, restrictions, liens, surveys and exceptions listed thereon, including negotiation for indicated modifications or releases thereof, and post-closing follow-up duties. He also conducts non-judicial foreclosure sales, and prepares and files mechanic’s liens in several states.

Educational background

Mr. Bernard received his undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas in 1973 and his law degree from Creighton University School of Law in 1976.

Special achievements, recognitions or accolades

Mr. Bernard is active in the civic community.  He is on the Board and is past chairman of the Board of the National World War One Museum (Liberty Memorial); on the Board and past president of the City of Fountains Foundation; on the Board and past Council Commissioner for the Heart of America Council, Boy Scouts of America and has received its Silver Beaver Award and Whitney M. Young Award; President of the Estelle S. and Robert A. Long Ellis Foundation; Elder and served as Clerk of Session for 15 years, Second Presbyterian Church; past president of Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas City and the Historic Kansas City Foundation.


He is a member of the Missouri Bar, the Kansas Bar, and the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court, and is a member of the American Bar Association, Lawyers Association of Kansas City, and Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association.
